Catachocha is the common name for this town in the district called Paltas, and the name Paltas is the legal name of the town, as well. The town dates back to 1824. Though, this area has been occupied since before the Inca times.
Catacocha is a tourist destination for mostly eco-adventurers. The population, as of 2010, was only about 6600. This is a very small town.
