Chiang Rai, Thailand - Polarsteps

Do you love temples ?? We've seen a lot of them as it's a big cultural significance in Thailand. I can imagine the feeling of the foreigners when they visit our European churches... And this one ,the White Temple or Wat Rong Khun is not the classic temple that one would usually come across when you travel in Thailand. It is one of the most recognizable contemporary, unconventional, privately-owned art exhibit in the form of a Buddhist temple... and probably even more! A bit of history : By the end of the 20th century, the original Wat Rong Khun was in a bad state of repair. Chalermchai Kositpipat, a local artist from Chiang Rai, decided to completely rebuild the temple and fund the project with his own money. The artist intends for the area adjacent to the temple to be a center of learning and meditation and for people to gain benefit from the Buddhist teachings. Kositpipat considers the temple to be an offering to Buddha and believes the project will give him immortal life... Today the works are ongoing, but are not expected to be completed until 2070!! In contrast to the Blue temple where everything is blue, here the inside is colorful, we are inside of hell so the artist paints with an ultra realistic style some mickey mousse or batman on the wall... Unfortunately the pictures were not allowed so their quality is not the best! At the same place, the artist also created a temple for Ganesha but a golden one! There is also a really nice garden with some improbable gnomes... So interesting temples ^^
