Kuhmo, Finland - Polarsteps
This evening we are sleeping in a hunting blind! The eastern border between Finland and Russia is home to roughly 2500 bears and in certain areas chances of seeing them from a hunting blind is quite high. We first get a safety briefing.
Don’t leave the blind until 7:00 in the morning
No talking
No crunchy snacks or snacks where the sounds from the packaging might scare away the bears
No lights
A little after 16:00 we install ourselves in the blind and take turns peering through the glass.
In the next few hours we see three different bears! At some point one bear is only 5 meters away from the blind and we can hear it walking behind the blind through the marsh.
A very exciting experience!
