  2. Tumbes Mangrove

Zarumilla, Peru - Polarsteps

Today was our day to explore the mangroves of Tumbes. At 10:00am we were picked up and driven to Tumbes first to register and pay for our tour. It turned out that we took the less popular/touristic tour and much more ecological and that we were the only 3 for the day. After another 25 minute drive we ended up at our starting point. Very run down and extremely basic and after another registration it was time to get into the boat. Our tour took us deep in the mangroves and very close to the Ecuadorian border seeing all sorts of birds, fish, clams, crabs and much more. At one point we stopped at a watch tower and camp was set. We would have our lunch here, homemade ceviche made with fish and shrimps! Emma helped out with cutting and cleaning the fish and very soon after that we were enjoying our meal. When it was time to head back to base we got a lift from a motorised boat who catched a lot of crab (which they are only allowed to catch by hand). Once back at basecamp we had a closer look and Emma tried to hold one but got a bit too scared in the end. After that we drove back to Tumbes and soon after back to the hotel
