Lockhart Beach Campground, Canada - Polarsteps

We didn't know about this route option when we started across BC, and it's a really, really good thing people kept advising us to take it. Staying on Highway 3 would have seen us grinding over the Kootenay Pass, the highest highway summit in BC, where there was in fact some serious fresh snowfall at this time. Instead we took this little free ferry across Kootenay Lake, where we could look at mountains but not climb them, and then rode a really quiet winding road down the side of the lake towards Creston; most of the traffic came every 1.5 hours when the ferry would dock, and besides that it was usually just us on the roads. We camped at a provincial park (the signs are from there-- 'Bedroom Eyes Bear', and we've added 'GOT BATS? REPORT YOUR BATS' to things we call out on the road). -Sara
