On board again: Chilean fjords
Última Esperanza, Chile - Polarsteps
On a boat again, I just can't wait to get on a boat again 🎶 Our trip mainly consists of hiking and sailing. So what do we do after another hiking adventure? Right, we step on board again!🛳️⚓ This time no luxury, three courses diners, a sauna or even a bed. It's a ferry ride this time! A ferry of at least 41 hours from Puerto Natales to Caleta Tortel.
We sleep in ordinary airplane seats and eat probably worse than prisoners do (at least the trays look properly prison-like). But we have a full bag of snacks and enjoy the stunning scenery of the Chilean fjords we sail through!
What a beautiful green, lush landscape! During the entire trip we were surrounded by dramatic fjords and the typical, ever changing Patagonian weather which appears to be even more temperamentful here than on shore. We applied our Antarctica knowledge and saw lots of cormorants, some albatrosses, several seals in the morning, and -just at the moment we were talking about our experience of spotting whales from the World Explorer's decks- it was Liselot who yelled 'blows'. Frank quickly yelled to the people inside 'WHALES'. Right on time to be on deck when several fin whales were passing by! 🐳
On the route we passed the self-acclaimed paradise Puerto Edén, a small village situated on one of the thousands islands in the middle of nowhere. Another remarkable point was a wreckage where our ferry even slowed down and did a beautiful circle to show us what happens when two ships collide. 💥
After 56 hours on board, it's lovely how accurate Chilean time schedules are, it was 5 a.m. when we reached our next destination... (Supposed to be there at 10 p.m.)
