Arequipa, Peru - Polarsteps

Hola Peru! 🇵🇪 A new country to discover and we directly fell in love with Arequipa. No wonder, it's said to be the most beautiful city in Peru!🌟 The historic city centre is filled with colonial buildings all made from light-coloured rock, a volcanic kind of stone from the volcanoes that are guarding the city. It felt as entering the set of Game of Thrones. Our days were mainly structured by the meal times🥣. Peru is finally a country in South-America with a great food culture!!! Among local dishes we tried ceviche🐟, ocopa 🥔(potatoes with peanut sauce), rocoto relleno🌶️ (stuffed pepper) and salto lomado🥩 (steak-ish). There was also a good Thai-Peruvian fusion restaurant that gave us an interesting view of both cuisines. And many western food options as well! (Waffles for breakfast 🥰) Although eating is already a cultural activity, we included some churches and musea in our visit. For example, the impressive monasterio de Santa Catalina⛪, which is a must visit in Arequipa. In this enclosed paradise around 150 nuns lived and prayed in luxury (they all had their own room!!). 🏛️The museum dedicated to Juanita learned us more about the Inca offering rituals. Back in the days, they even offered children, because they were seen as pure👶. The last room of the museum shows the frozen body of a 12 year old child named Juanita (after the discoverer that found her) that once found her destiny in such a ritual. 🍓🌶️ We also found our way to the local market. The perfect place to buy shoe soles and new socks. Or discover all the exotic fruits that Peru got on offer! Of course this stop cannot be without meeting Richard and Tarja again. We will even share our next adventure together! 🦵
