Roadtrip stop #2: Vicuña and the observatories
Vicuña, Chile - Polarsteps
After reluctantly leaving our beautiful previous campsite, we crossed into the Elqui valley. This valley is famous for two things: its pisco (a local type of brandy distilled from grapes, which is used in the omnipresent Pisco Sour) and its observatories ✨🔭 (which go well together with the pisco obviously🥂).
To get to the valley, we had to cross a pass which according to some you need to have a 4x4 for. Our little Volkswagen Golf did just fine 💪. A steep, unpaved road led high into the mountains, where we also saw the first observatories. The surroundings were incredible; dry hills abundant with shrubs and cacti and green valleys filled with pisco grapes. 🌵
We settled in the cute little town Vicuña, from where we toured the largest pisco factory in Chile and had a lovely pisco tasty🥃. The next day we went to one of the observatories, to peek through its 🔭, viewing distant galaxies and nebulas💫. It was a spectacular experience which we never had done before. Liselot also learned that apparently her telephone got a semi-profesional camera setting, which allowed us to make amazing photos of the Galaxy. You can see the results ✨⭐✨!
