  3. Colca Canyon - the deepest canyon in the world

Malata, Peru - Polarsteps

Noticed that we like extremities? Here we go again: The deepest canyon in the world! 💡 It's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. And okay to be fair, it isn't the deepest either, there is a canyon next to this one that's actually a bit deeper. However, the "true" deepest canyon is harder to reach, so they like to give the title to Colca Canyon! 🏆 What better way to explore the canyon, and experience the true depth, than on foot? 🥾We opted for a three day hike and shared this experience with our friends Richard&Tarja. We definitely wanted to do this without a guide, but to make it a bit easier we 'cheated' and took the organized transport to Cabanaconde, the starting point. The advantage of this way of transport is the stop at the Cruz del Condor. Where, particularly in the morning, lots of condors can be spotted🔭. These enormous birds soar on the heating air in the morning sun, to bring them higher into the sky. 🌀🪽 Than the hiking started... These days had especially one thing in common: the extreme lack of shade. The sun is killing and cooling breezes are rare. The first day we only went down, deep into the canyon. What kept us going, was the prospect of soaking down in a hot spring at one of the most beautiful places we stayed this trip! Also the second day (after going up and down this time) brought us to a beautiful oasis where a swimming pool waited for our plunge! The shocking part of that second day only happened just before we went to sleep. The earth was literally shocking under our feet. A moderate 3.9 earthquake happened to be in just 10 kilometer distance! The last day arrived... From the start of the trek we were already scared of this last trek, solely 6 kilometers... But. Only. Up. 1200 meters ascent
